Help! No One’s Subscribing To My Ezine!

If You Do Not Follow These 3 Golden Rules In Ezine Publishing, You’re Throwing Away Earning Opportunities Like They Were Trash

So you feel that you have the best online newsletter on the internet.

The problem is, no one seems to be subscribing to your mailing list.  Worse, members who have previously subscribed are unsubscribing at rate that is faster than a puma being chased by a dinosaur.

And you wonder…. “what’s wrong with my setup?”

Chances are, you haven’t been following the 3 commandments in eZine publishing.  Do you know what these commandments are?  In this article, we’re going to discuss them one by one, and hopefully, such would make you realize where you have been failing and how to remedy the situation.

Ready?

Golden Rule No. 1: It’s Not About You, It’s About Them

The mistake that most eZine publishers make is that they use their online newsletters as a venue for their narcissistic tendencies.  They talk about themselves like they are the best in their fields.  They talk about the events of their days, their beliefs on certain issues, how their girlfriends are dumb to have dumped them for the gardener… things like that, and at a very, very regular basis as well.

The thing is, their subscribers don’t want to hear about those things.

Don’t get me wrong.  Talking about one’s self can work.  It helps establish rapport between the publisher and his readers.  It humanizes the relationship which promotes skepticism because of the anonymity prevalent in the World Wide Web.  It could be used to introduce a need which the publisher’s products can try to solve.  And it could help brand the publisher as an expert – a real expert – in the field.

But everything has its limits.

If the publisher does nothing but talk about himself without imparting anything valuable in the process, his subscribers would just feel ripped off.  Quite possibly, they’d think that they’re giving more than what they’re receiving, by being an audience to a megalomaniac.

You wouldn’t want this to happen, right?

There should be a balance between what you will share about your own thoughts, and…

Golden Rule No. 2: Always Provide Something Of Value

Let’s face it.  Subscribers do not subscribe just to read about your rants or to receive your sales pitches.  They expect something worth their time as compensation for the mails they will receive from you.

The way you could achieve this is by providing valuable content for the members of your mailing list.  In may be an e-course detailing how they could be successful with a process relevant to the subject of your eZine.  Or perhaps even news items reporting the latest trends in the industry.  Articles, whether they’re your own or from sources like www.ezinearticles.com , www.goarticles.com or www.isnare.com are also perfect, provided that if you choose the latter approach, you should respect copyright restrictions.

If you have to talk about yourself, just make sure that you’re leading to a point which your subscribers can learn from.  Gary Halbert, one of the most renowned copywriters, online and offline, runs a newsletter at www.thegaryhalbertletters.com .  Study his style.  He strikes a perfect balance between self-promotion and educating his subscribers, and in the process, he manages to build his name to great heights of prominence.

Golden Rule No. 3: Leads Into Subscriptions Into Sales

Running an eZine involves three basic processes:

1. Acquiring leads
2. Converting leads into subscribers
3. Converting subscribers into sales

This is a continuous cycle.  It shouldn’t cease.  You need to generate leads for your mailing list all the time.  Enough is never enough.  The more leads you manage to gain, the more subscribers you’re likely to have.  And the more subscribers you have, the higher your chances are of bagging some sales when you do decide to make your sales pitch.
